VIdeos: Salon Thrive

Salon Thrive videos were created during COVID to highlight artists and provoke conversations about their work.

Kehler Liddell Gallery, and ArtEcon Initiative, present: SalonThrive, a virtual gathering place for art discussion and discovery on Sundays at 5:00pm on the Zoom platform. Kicking off with Gar Waterman on Sunday, May 3rd, each episode will feature a different local CT-based artist host, broadcasting live from their studio. All who log on and gather 'round will have the opportunity to explore the artist's studio, their work, ideas and influences, in an intimate and unique studio backdrop. Participants can access SalonThrive by going to Kehler Liddell Gallery’s Facebook Page, or kehlerliddellgallery.com, click on the SalonThrive event link, and then the RSVP link to register. KLG has an energetic starting lineup of hosts with each episode on Sunday at 5:00pm: May 3: Stone carver, metal sculptor, and one of KLG's founders, Gar Waterman. May 10: A double exposure of photography with husband and wife team, Penrhyn and Rod Cook. May 17: Painter Frank Bruckmann digs through a few layers of paint in his latest work. May 24: Artist Ana Henriques mixes it up with multimedia work in her home studio. SalonThrive finds its inspiration from the gatherings of the Paris Salon that began in 1667 when people — usually most from the creative sector — were invited to come together to exchange ideas in the Salon/Studio of the host. This 2020 version of the salon offers inclusion and accessibility to all interested in broadening their conversation about the arts. Gar Waterman was born in Maine and grew up in Princeton, NJ. After graduating Dartmouth College, Waterman moved to Pietrasanta, Italy, where he lived for seven years and learned to carve stone. His sculpture combines observation of natural phenomena, sensual devotion to the tactile possibilities of material, and a model maker's tinkering sensibility. In 1996, the artist acquired an abandoned warehouse for $1 from the City of New Haven and transformed it into West Rock Studio, where he has lived and worked for the last 24 years.

Rod Cook worked as a commercial photographer in New York for the first 25 years of his career. His fine art career began in 1996 with “Cypress Knees and Tupelos,” nudes taken in cypress swamps in and around Savannah, Georgia. Since then he has created his own interpretations of botanicals, landscapes, masks, mannequins and statues, often incorporating other mediums into the photographs. Penrhyn Cook says: “A black and white photographic workshop 20 years ago opened my eyes to photography and life changed for me. Photography became a personal search for my own vision of the world. I started with film, but now work digitally.”

Ana Henriques works on handmade paper, or wall hangings, explore the spaces women fill and create, asking how the metaphysical or spiritual is used to elevate/explore the female narrative. She also explores destruction and regeneration, and the socio-political history of women. She uses elements of South American quilts and weaving, traditional embroidery and paper making/cutting to consider how craft is used functionally and traditionally by women. As a project coordinator for OPIRG (Ontario Public Interest Research Group), she brought the work of women weavers from Tlamacazapa, Mexico to Ontario informing her exploration of traditional craft. Ana received a BFA in Visual Arts at York University, after a gap year teaching in Hong Kong. She then trained as an art teacher in Oxford, UK. The breadth of experience and perspective gleaned from traveling and teaching in myriad countries continues to inform her art and practice. Chris remembers enjoying drawing ever since he was a small child. During high school, he attended E.C.A. (Educational Center for the Arts) in New Haven, CT, an experience that he says allowed him to explore his creativity in new ways. He then went on to earn a degree in Illustration from Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT, with the intention of embarking on a career in children's book illustration. However, he quickly realized his heart belonged to fine art, and has been painting and exhibiting his work for the last 20+ years. His work has been shown in local venues in and around New Haven, including DaSilva Gallery and Kehler Liddell Gallery. Currently, his primary focus is on local scenery and landscapes. Michael began photographing the people, streets, and landscape of his native Brooklyn, New York when he was eight years old. Pressman states, a photographic image is a work of imagination—by the creator of the image through the camera’s eye and by the viewer experiencing that creation. By photographing common natural sights--landscape and wildlife, Michael sought the abstraction and depth secreted within the image. As a national broadcast journalist for both ABC News and NBC News, 20/20, Dateline NBC, and the Today show for 30 years, this episode of SalonThrive offers a host with a many varied influences.

After a decade in self-study of photography Roy went back to school and got an MFA at the University of Delaware. Both before and after his MFA he taught photography in a number of schools. Subsequently, change in his circumstances included a dormant period of photography and his creative inspiration shifted to writing.

Though primarily self-taught, Antle-O'Donnell studied printmaking and studio arts at New York University (BA, English), Paier College of Art, and Rhode Island School of Design. She has also been serving as the Director of Kehler Liddell Gallery since 2017, and has been a member artist since 2013. Take an insider's look at Michael Pressman's exhibition, "Surface Rising," on view at KLG through October 25, 2020. Through a series of diptychs, Pressman investigates the differences, and perhaps more profoundly, the similarities, between realistic and abstract photography. Pressman states: “Each pair is presented as if one click of the camera shutter captured both. Under the surface, they are alike — not abstract, not realistic. Simply, how I see the world.” For more information, visit: http://www.kehlerliddellgallery.com/viewing-room-pressman.
